“Mental health remains a taboo subject for many,” explains photographer Rolf A. Jensen. A way of bringing those hidden grievances suffered silently by many to light, Jensen’s latest shoot visualizes the experience of compulsive disorders – in a fashion setting. The end result is a series of images you cannot shy away from. Illustrations by Aldous Massie infiltrate the shots more so than decorate them, like hallucinatory visions that creep their way into a troubled mind. Model Carina Velva acts out the experiences of claustrophobia, anger, paranoia, schizophrenia.

Dark and visually striking it may be, but it’s a case of using fashion and beauty not just for aesthetic value but as a tool for drawing attention to a deeper cause. “The goal is to focus on the suffering that people hide inside,” says Jensen, and to encourage “the necessary help, support, understanding that is needed.”

The variations on the 1920s theme keep rolling out, each editorial picking up the tune and either stripping it back to the barest melody, or embellishing it with trills and turns. In most cases there’s a feeling of opulence that defines our vision of the era: shiny metallics, fluffy feathers, delicate fabrics that hang from the body – never cling tightly to it.

This particular take was both styled and photographed by Damian Foxe. Starring Sam Rollinson, it includes the usual suspects of the ’20s revival world: the art deco dresses of Gucci and Cavalli, the doll-like makeup, the black bob here worn with short bangs.

When a collection such as Diesel Black Gold comes gliding down the runaway, whispers are heard… “What will they think of next?” Except what we don’t realise is that everything you thought was done, hasn’t even been scratched yet. Take the Black Gold Menswear show for autumn (fall) / winter 2012 – a mélange of fabrics, shapes, styles, looks – the list goes on… all married into little themes of greatness.

Colours apparent for next season are seen in tones of tomato red, textured navy, dull cobalt blue, dark aubergine and tobacco stripes. Knitwear is technically constructed into wide knit jumpers; velvet is paneled with leather for tailoring and suits are candy stripe-esque in multiple colourways.

KASANE – a Japanese word that means “to layer” is both an allegory and the essence of the concept lying behind the Issey Miyake menswear collection for the autumn / winter 2012 season. Inspired by the quintessence of Kasane – a practical function and artistic impression on the designs – the collection under the reign of four designers successfully supervises reinterpretations of layering techniques through the textile development and tailoring process.

There is a great tribute to the layering concept portrayed by the signature pleating method of the house, as well as by colour degradations and a unique mirage of layering achieved by the special dip–dyeing techniques or texture graduations on the outwear and other parts of the ensembles. As a result, the line for menswear depicts an established yet multidimensional route for Kasane stamped by Issey Miyake’s affinity to Japanese craftsmanship and linking to the country’s traditional home wear.

If you’re the apotheosis of British eccentricity – the veritable King of quirky twists – you can’t just open up any old store. Ask anyone who’s ever wandered into a Paul Smith store in any city of the world, and they’ll tell you: it’s not your average clothing boutique. Each of Smith’s retail spaces is a feat of design as eclectic and creative as the man himself, with art-lined walls and antique furniture; perhaps you might even stumble upon a vintage bicycle or signature-striped Mini Cooper. You never really know. All you can know is that you’re just as likely to walk out with some household ornament, artwork or unusual piece of reading material as you are to walk out with a velvet blazer or pair of to-die-for leather brogues.

And so, having decided that it was time for Australia to have such a retail space, the question for Paul Smith was inevitably where? The brand have now announced that ever-important location. And it’s a good one.
